You're Doing It Wrong

No one cares about you. They only care about themselves.

I read this the other day on a marketer’s Instagram post.

It went further to say, “Most people screw this up. They talk entirely too much about themselves. Truth. No one cares. They only care about themselves. Period.”

I agreed and then immediately got defensive and started trying to rationalize why talking about myself is different.

According to marketing masters, I’ve been doing this all wrong.

Criticism is hard to take. Learning to deal with it positively is a skill.

The best artists, managers, and bosses have mastered it.

The worst fight back, get defensive and lash out, making feedback hard to give.

‘No one cares about you.” Got it, I’m going to work on it, but first I’m going to talk more about myself. Sorry, old habits die hard.

I started Honest Intent with some goals. To get better at putting myself out there. To share my marketing experiences, mistakes, and stories to help others learn from them.

With these in mind, every future post needs to offer a takeaway; something readers can have for themselves. Not me, me, me.

I’m learning as I go and hoping to take criticism to improve.

If the truth is, no one cares about me. As a marketer, it’s my job to make you.

Criticism taken. Challenge accepted.

What’s in it for me, can only be measured by what I give to you.

Let’s hope it’s something worthwhile.
