The Benefits of Self-Destruction

As a member of the ‘Skateboard Industry,’ is it weird that I love this?

If the downfall were to happen, a lot of my friends and I would be out of jobs, and I’d feel differently.

But let’s put reality aside. Why does destroying the industry I work in sound so good?

Skateboarding is conscious self-destruction with a healthy side of underdog complex.

Beautiful painstakingly created board graphics, dusted within the first few minutes. Same for every other component of your setup, if used correctly.

Public and private property; waxed, ridden on, knobbed, de-knobbed, and eventually completely destroyed.

Our bodies and minds, rooted in the masochism it takes to learn to ride a skateboard and the extra suffering necessary to get good on one. Knowing full well that one day the years of abuse won’t allow us to roll at all.

Our time is always fleeting, and we know it. The systems we build are designed to buckle, be overthrown, and given to the next generation to rebuild.

The scariest place to be in skateboarding is at the top. Success is hard to hold when controlled by youth.

Youth is fickle, emotional, irrational, and still perfectly untethered by the realities of life. The keys will always be theirs to hold.

Looking to set fire to the system? Ask even the most seasoned industry veteran; they’ll have to fight every instinct in their body not to hand you the match just to watch it burn.
